[Review] Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Finally, a Call of Duty that brings back a good campaign and grounded multiplayer in one package.
Modern Warfare has an amazing campaign that both looks and feels amazing. The story follows Captain Price (from the original series) and a few other new characters. It delves into how a resistance movement is formed and how there are grey areas in any conflict.
The campaign has missions familiar to any who have played Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2. Some of the missions are from the perspective of someone living through the conflict, and the others are from the perspective Special Ops team sent to help. One of the best missions is titled “Going Dark” which is reminiscent of the OG stealth level in the original game “All Ghillied Up”.
The graphics are amazing for a Call of Duty game, in the campaign they must have hand crafted every detail to impress. The multiplayer has great graphics as well, but they may not be as polished as Battlefield 5. You can see amazing textures on desks, walls, and other parts of the environment. What really shines is the volumetric lighting. Lighting is one of the most important things that make games look astounding in 2019, and Modern Warfare impresses in this regard.
The multiplayer in Modern Warfare feels like a cross between Battlefield and Call of Duty 4. It feels fantastic and satisfying using the wide array of weapons available when you level up. Each weapon also has a number of attachments so you can customize your play-style at will. The difficulty is back as well, in any game mode you can expect 1-5 bullets to put someone down. Modern Warfare multiplayer is like playing hardcore mode from other games in the franchise, which can be a good thing if you’re looking for realism.
Activision, as of December 2019, has been releasing free maps and game types for multiplayer. Which is in stark contrast to previous Call of Duty games. Some of these new maps are remastered versions of old Modern Warfare maps while others are completely new. This is a great value for Modern Warfare, hopefully Activision continues providing free content into 2020. Time will tell.
A big inclusion in Modern Warfare is cross play between consoles and PC. The developers have implemented this feature very well. There are some instances and movements (such as jumping while aiming) that players using a mouse and keyboard have an advantage due to the restrictive layout on a controller, but the differences are barely noticeable for the average player.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the best CoD to come out in recent years, it shows from the graphics quality to the fresh gameplay elements. They finally did something right.
